Nanomedicine Will Be Topic During Special Session of President’s Council of Bioethics
A special session of the President’s Council on Bioethics is scheduled to meet on June 29, 2007, in Washington DC.
The council’s agenda includes plans to discuss the implications of emerging research in the fields of nanotechnology and nanomedicine. Two experts in the field of nanoscience, Dr Andrew Maynard (Chief Science Advisor, Woodrow Wilson Center on Emerging Nanotechnologies) and Dr Mauro Ferrari (Chairman, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston) have been invited to provide their perspectives on the potential risks and benefits associated with these rapidly growing areas of study.
Although nanoresearch is still in the exploratory phase, scientists strongly believe these engineered structures may lead to new, less invasive therapies for treating chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
