Prostate Cancer Patients at Increased Risk of Osteoporosis
Results from a recent study conducted at the Autonoma University School of Medicine in Barcelona, Spain, show a considerably higher incidence of osteoporosis in males undergoing treatment for prostate cancer than males in the general population.
“Men who had undergone androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) were particularly at risk” said lead researcher Dr. Jacques Planas from the university’s Department of Urology.
According to the April 2007 issue of the urology journal BJU International, prostate cancer patients should be routinely advised to take at least 1000mg of calcium a day and their bone mineral density should be assessed at regular intervals.
