New Bank Collects Blood & Tissue Donations
A national bank designed to house blood and tissue samples from cancer patients has opened in the United Kingdom.
The bank, operated by onCore UK, will securely store tumor and blood donations voluntarily provided by patients and make them accessible to researchers who are studying the disease.
The Department of Health and the Medical Research Council are collaborating with onCore UK and other UK tissue banks to facilitate cancer research throughout the country. The new initiative’s goal is to provide scientists with the high quality samples they need to develop and test new treatments while also assisting patients who want to support research efforts. As one onCore executive explains,
“onCore UK was set up both to help facilitate cancer research in the UK and to meet the desire expressed by people with cancer to help. Many patients want to do something to support research into their disease and to help others in the future.”
