Creative Cell Biologists Share Communications Award
A prestigious award honoring active researchers who creatively communicate information about scientific discoveries to the general public will be shared this year by two cell biologists.
Professor Ali Saib and Dr Christian Sardet, both from France, have been named co-recipients of the 2007 European Molecular Biology Organization Award for Communication in the Life Sciences. Both scientists were chosen based on their innovative use of multimedia formats in creating entertaining and educational resources for teachers, students, researchers, and the broader public.
Dr Sardet, an embryologist, used interactive technology to communicate information about detailed molecular events. In his DVD, Exploring the Living Cell, Sardet employed film and animation to explain how cells were discovered, their functions, their impacts on health and disease, and projections about future discoveries.
Professor Saib, a retrovirus researcher, initiated a project educating inner city children on infectious diseases. He also collaborates with high schools, universities, and research institutes to arrange undergraduate student visits to research labs. Students in the program work directly with scientists conducting research, bridging the gap between the scientific community and society.
The scientists may be working in different research fields, but they are both on the same page when it comes to the importance of sharing information about science:
“Communicating life sciences to the public and especially to youngsters should be part of our daily job. This is important to give them the minimal scientific tools for understanding our world and future challenges, and to recreate a link between scientists and the society. Such as effort should also be considered when evaluating researchers’ activities.”

The scientists will receive their awards at the annual EMBO/EMBL Science and Society Conference in Heidelberg, Germany, on November 2, 2007.
