Outpatient Procedure Helps Relieve Spinal Cancer Pain
An innovative procedure is bringing some much-needed relief to patients suffering from painful and potentially paralyzing forms of spinal cancer.
Vertebroplasty, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved procedure, uses a radio frequency signal to vaporize spinal tumors and then replaces the destroyed area with special surgical cement. Besides relieving the pain, the cementing technique also helps prevent paralysis caused by bone collapse.
Patients can have the procedure, return home the same day, and experience immediate relief. As one physician explained,
“I think for those people who suffer grievously from this particular problem, I think it’s a potential godsend for them.”
