New Research Institute Opens in Scotland
The Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) has officially opened its doors in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The new institute brings together resources and funding from the Medical Research Council’s Human Genetics Unit, the Centre for Molecular Medicine, the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, and Cancer Research UK including more than 500 scientists involved in multidisciplinary studies on a variety of common diseases.
Cancer research will be a top priority at IGMM. Officials there said one of their first goals will be the development of better non-toxic treatments to manage cancer.
During opening ceremonies, Professor Nick Hastie, Director of IGMM, stressed the important role the new institute will play in scientific studies of genetics, molecular medicine, and cancer research. As the IGMM mission statement explains, the institute’s focus will be:
“To identify molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying normal human development, maintenance and disease, including malformations, later onset anomalies and cancer, and translate these findings for clinical benefit.”
The IGMM is based at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.
