Medical Gift Cards for Cancer Patients
Want to get something practical for a loved one facing cancer treatments or a hospital stay over the holidays? Medical gift cards are now an option.
VISA® has begun issuing prepaid healthcare gift cards that can be used to pay for health insurance deductibles, prescription co-pays, corrective lenses, elective surgeries, and an assortment of other health-related expenses like dental care. Available increments range from 25 to 5,000 dollars and the recipient still gets to deduct the medical expenses on their taxes.
With many Americans being uninsured or underinsured, the idea might just catch on—especially with 35-50 year olds comprising the sandwich generation. As a representative of the company offering the new VISA® explained,
“…they’ve got parents that have health needs, and they’ve got a spouse that has health needs, and older children going off to college or living on their own that have health needs.”

The cards can be used at any provider that accepts VISA® cards for payment, but they aren’t available in stores so interested consumers will need to purchase them online or over the phone.
And as the Consumer Federation of America reminds us, don’t forget to consider all associated fees, expiration dates and replacement options before purchasing any type of gift card.
