Fred Hutchinson Climbs Volcanoes to Beat Breast Cancer
Two volcanoes in central Mexico have been added to the impressive list of international peaks being scaled to raise money for breast cancer research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC).
The 2008 Climb to Fight Breast Cancer® includes peaks at elevations ranging from 10,781 feet to 19,340 feet located in in Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Russia and Tanzania. Participants commit to raising $3,000 to $10,000 depending on the location selected.
Outdoor enthusiasts, cancer survivors and family members of all skill levels participate in the guided events. Professionals from Alpine Ascents International will be leading FHCRC’s volcano groups on the additional Pico de Orizaba and Ixtaccihuati expeditions in October and November 2008. FHCRC reports the popular fundraiser has earned more than $3 million for breast cancer research since the first climb took place on Mount Adams 11 years ago. People interesting in joining a climb can obtain information by visiting the FHCRC web site or by calling (206)667-1398.
